5D Class Page

This autumn our topic will be Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.  We will learn about the daily lives of these groups and how they have influenced our lives today.  As part of this topic we will be having some Viking visitors from the Jorvik Museum in York.

Our Science topics will be Life Cycles and Space.  In music, our song this term will be Livin’ on a Prayer by Bon Jovi. In English we will be writing for a range of audiences and purposes including recounts, letters, reports, poems, persuasion and narratives. In maths we will be studying place value and the four operations.

Our Curriculum

It is extremely important that children read regularly in school and at home.  Please read with your child and ask them questions about their book.  There are questions in children’s planners to help you see the types of questions you should ask.  Our class novels that we will use in class this term are Viking Boy, Anglo-Saxon Boy and The Dragons Hoard.

Extra Bits

Each week children will get English and a piece of maths homework.  Children will receive a topic based homework which should take a half term to complete.  This homework is ongoing.  The maths and English will be given on a Friday and needs to be returned on Wednesday, where children will be tested on their spellings. Additionally, we have an online learning platform (Class Dojo) where you and your child has an account to access online resources.

In Year 5, we have a termly MP Dart League where the children participate in league fixtures to crown

our darts champion. Both pupils and teaching staff take part in the league. The leagues aims are to:

- develop children's fine motor skills.

- develop mathematical rapid recall (number bonds / addition / subtraction / multiplication / division).

- develop key speaking and listening skills.

- develop a 'good' sportsmanship nature.
